What Assize Research is

Good decisions about the justice system need good evidence. Assize Research publishes reports and briefings on how courts and tribunals are working in practice, built on published data and other primary sources.

Our first reports are in preparation.

What we publish

  • Reports. In-depth research on one part of the justice system.
  • Briefings. Short, timely analysis of a single question or a new set of figures.
  • Data and methods. Wherever we can, the data and methods behind our findings, so others can check and build on them.

Our principles

  • Evidence first. Our conclusions follow the evidence, and we say plainly where it runs out.
  • Transparent. We explain how we did the work, including the limits of the data. If anyone else funds or commissions a piece of research, we say so on it.
  • Accurate. Our work is checked before it is published, and corrected openly if we get something wrong.
  • About the system. We focus on how the justice system works rather than on individual people, and we follow data protection law.

Free to read

Our research is free for anyone to read and share.

Independent

Assize Research is independent. It is not a government department, court, tribunal or producer of official statistics, and it is not part of or endorsed by one.
