About us

Assize Data Ltd builds products and services from UK legal and court data. We’re a small, profitable company, and you’d be the second person to join the team alongside the founder. You’d see how a data business is run end to end and have real influence on what we build.

The role

This is a flexible, part-time role of roughly 4–6 hours a week, done around your main job, studies or other commitments. You’ll work on the whole business rather than one narrow area, including:

  • Cloud and local infrastructure
  • Backend systems and databases
  • User interfaces
  • Analytics
  • SEO
  • General business operations

You don’t need experience in any of these. We’ll train you on the job, and you’ll be given more responsibility as you grow. In your first three months you can expect to learn the codebase and data, make small improvements through pull requests, and contribute to short written proposals (RFCs).

How we work

  • Fully remote and asynchronous. There are no fixed hours and no regular meetings. Work is discussed and reviewed in writing, through pull requests and RFCs.
  • In your own time. Hours are agreed by arrangement with at least a week’s notice. There’s no guaranteed minimum, and you’re free to turn work down.
  • Other work is welcome. You can have another job, as long as it doesn’t conflict with this one.

Conferences and travel

A few times a year (up to about 10 in 2027) we attend conferences in London or similar. Attendance is voluntary. You’d be paid for a full 8-hour day at the event, and reasonable travel and overnight costs are covered under our expenses policy. Travel time itself is unpaid.

Pay and terms

  • £15–30 an hour depending on experience, paid monthly through PAYE
  • Statutory holiday pay
  • A discretionary cash bonus
  • Employed by Assize Data Ltd, with a 3-month probation. Notice is one week during probation and one month afterwards.
  • Work you create in the role belongs to the company.
  • You’ll handle personal data, so you’ll get a data protection induction and sign a confidentiality agreement.

About you

Essential

  • Curious, and happy to learn independently
  • Clear written communication, because most of our work is async
  • Careful with detail and with sensitive data
  • Reliable: you do what you say you’ll do and flag problems early
  • Right to work in the UK

Helpful, but not required

  • Any experience of programming, databases, data analysis, SEO or running a small business
  • An interest in law, courts, public data or transparency
